Lives and works in Toronto

“Performance for a Portrait of My First House is the continuation of a series of performances created with invisible materials. The chosen material is both the subject of the performance, the object used as material in the work, and the audience to the action. In this way, Performance for a Portrait of My First House is also a self-portrait.”

Shannon Cochrane is a Toronto based artist and has participated in performance art festivals around the world. Shannon Cochrane (Canada) is the current Director of FADO Performance Art Centre (est. 1993), a Toronto-based artist-run centre, which presents the work of contemporary performance artists year-round. She is also a founding member, co-curator and organizer of the 7a*11d International Festival of Performance Art. (est. 1997).

"My work enlists the audience into a new relationship through the artist with each other; drawing freely on the idea that people agree on social institutions and give them meaning as well as agreeing on their roles within these constructions. My work seeks to extract a tacit agreement from the audience to become collaborative participants in the production of a work that cannot be made by one person alone; simple actions performed together as a site for social interaction.”

Shannon Cochranes’ participation at Guangzhou Live 4 is generously supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the consulate general of Canada in Guangzhou.
