Shu Yang, Chine

 

Born in 1969, lives and works in Beijing.

Shu Yang is an Independent curator, critic and artist born in Xi’an, China. He received his Bachelor degree in art in 1993 and a Master degree in arts in 1996 from Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts. Shu Yang taught fine art in the Architecture Department of Tianjin Institute of Urban Construction from 1996 to 1998. He has been active as an independent curator since 1999. He was invited to teach on art history in Art & Design Academy of North China University of Technology in Beijing from 2000 to 2003. He has been a member of Beijing Paper Tiger Theater Studio since 2000. He further worked as executive editor of the Chinese contemporary art magazine Next Wave in 2001.

He participated as an independent curator of China-UK Arts Management Placement Programme at Visiting Arts in London and Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff in 2003. Shu Yang was the director of DaDao Live Art Festival from 2003 to 2009. He also has completed an artist residency programme Breathe at Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester in 2004. Worked as chief-editor of art Magazine 798 Art Info and was the director of 798 Biennale 1 in 2005. He has been a planner of the Lightning Factory, Beijing since 2007, and has directed the DaDao Live Art Foundation since 2009. Shu Yang is the organiser of “Live Art International Biennial” and director of Eshu Art House in Songzhuang Artist Village, Beijing in 2011.
